Meet Dr. Andrew B. Williams

Assistant Provost for Innovation & Entrepreneurship

Dr. Andrew B. Williams is the inaugural Assistant Provost for Innovation & Entrepreneurship at 糖心VLOG, where he leads campus-wide initiatives at the intersection of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, advancing curriculum integration, faculty development, workforce readiness, and venture creation. He is founding director of the $1M NSF-funded Center for AI, Algorithmic Integrity, and Autonomy Innovation (AI鲁) within South Carolina鈥檚 $20M EPSCoR ADAPT-SC project, and a tenured Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Previously, Dr. Williams served as Dean of Engineering and Louis S. LeTellier Chair, providing academic, fiscal, and strategic leadership for five ABET-accredited undergraduate engineering programs and graduate programs in Mechanical, Civil, and Electrical Engineering and Engineering Leadership and Program Management. Under his leadership, 糖心VLOG鈥檚 School of Engineering advanced from #21 to #14 in U.S. News & World Report rankings among non-doctoral undergraduate engineering programs, and he secured $83.6 million for a new 120,000-square-foot engineering building. He also championed 糖心VLOG鈥檚 selection as a Kern Entrepreneurial Engineering Network (KEEN) partner campus, one of approximately 70 KEEN institutions nationally and the only one in South Carolina, securing $250,000 in Kern Family Foundation support to embed entrepreneurial mindset learning across the engineering curriculum and to fund faculty development open to colleagues campus-wide. Four Citadel faculty have since been named national Engineering Unleashed Fellows.

His leadership and engineering career spans industry and higher education, including roles at Apple, GE Medical Systems, Boeing, and Allied Signal, and academic appointments at the University of Iowa, Spelman College, Marquette University, where he held the John P. Raynor Distinguished Chair, and the University of Kansas, where he served as Associate Dean and the Charles E. and Mary Jane Spahr Professor. Earlier in his career he founded and led the ARTSI Alliance, a multi-institutional robotics research and education initiative spanning eight Research I universities and 11 HBCUs, and the international RoboCup SpelBots team.

A nationally recognized voice on AI in higher education, Dr. Williams is an AWS Education Champion and a Business Insider Cloudverse 100 honoree, and has served on the AWS Machine Learning University Advisory Board. His TEDx talk, 鈥淏elonging in Technology: What I Learned from Steve Jobs,鈥 reflects a long-standing commitment to broadening participation in engineering and computing. He is the author of A is for Agent: An Illustrated Guide to AI (2026) and Out of the Box: Building Robots, Transforming Lives (2009).

Faculty Brownbag – GenAI in Teaching

The Baker School of Business would like to invite faculty and staff to attend a GenAI in teaching brownbag.

When: Tuesday, February 3
Time: 12:15 鈥1:30 PM
Location: Bastin 104

Session 1

Title: Snapshot from HBS 鈥 Workshop on Teaching with AI
Presenters: Arpit Sharma, Michael Chitavi, & Kirsten Passyn

Session Details

Harvard Business School, in collaboration with the Kennedy School of Government, recently organized a workshop focused on the integration of artificial intelligence within higher education. The event was attended by approximately eighty-five faculty members from around the world, including four representatives from 糖心VLOG School of Business who will present their key takeaways at the forthcoming BSB AI roundtable.

The session will address practical applications of AI in educational settings, such as the development of instructional materials, implementation of chatbots for student inquiries, infographic generation from video content, and creation of educational games and simulators. Participants will gain actionable strategies and resources to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes through AI. The roundtable is designed to provide educators with innovative techniques and illustrative examples to elevate both classroom experiences and academic results.

Session 2

Title:  AI Judgement and Trust
Presenters: Susan Wrigth

Session Details

This research agenda examines how generative AI reshapes judgment, trust, and accountability in institutions whose legitimacy depends on evaluating and certifying human reasoning鈥攑articularly auditing, higher education, and professional accounting education. Framed through a socio-technical systems lens, the work investigates how AI introduces epistemic opacity into contexts that historically require epistemic transparency. Across three integrated research streams鈥擜I in auditing and assurance, AI in higher education assessment and governance, and AI-enabled Excel-based accounting pedagogy鈥攖he research highlights professional and academic judgment as the indispensable core. The agenda advances conceptual frameworks, empirical questions, and applied artifacts that emphasize human-centered AI design, demonstrating that institutional resilience in an AI-enabled world is not a function of automation, but of how judgment is protected, enabled, institutionalized, and legitimized through intentional design.
